Our upland landscapes are under ever greater threat as they are seen as the natural ‘acceptable’ place to locate wind turbines. They have however a strange poignant quality being home to a wide variety of species and fauna, constantly in a flux of colour shifts as the seasons change. This work tries to capture that raw beauty in a quiet protest to leave them alone.

The blanket of peat across the upland slopes of Northern Ireland is a rich habitat for a great variety of flora and fauna. It Is has been nicely described by the Irish Peatland Conservation Council as ‘valuable wetland, not wasteland’. We need to work harder to protect it.

The Ulster Scots word for field is ‘fiel’. According to the Ulster-Scots Academy these fiels were often given names ranging from the personal to the practical; names like Corry’s fiel, or Old Jimmy Katie’s fiel through to ‘hen-house’ fiel to the ubiquitous ‘fitba’ fiel. The word ‘hill’ was the second largest group of fiel names recorded, meaning ‘fields on a slope’.
